EachOne TeachOne currently offers scholarships for students residing in Bajo del Rio, Buena Vista, La Chepa, Lagunita, and Manglarito in the province of West Panama. Lagunita and La Chepa are an hour walk from Buena Vista. There is no access other than by foot or by horse. Bajo del Rio, Lagunita, and Manglarito each are home to approximately one hundred people with a small one-room schoolhouse for grades one through six. La Chepa is a community of approximately fifty people; children commute to the elementary school in either Buena Vista or Lagunita. EachOne TeachOne’s efforts center in the town of Buena Vista. Approximately three hundred and fifty people reside in Buena Vista, with fifty children in primary school. Children learn in a two-room elementary school (three grades are taught simultaneously by one teacher). Students who study past the sixth grade must commute forty-minutes one way to middle school.
The 2000 Panama census documents that most Buena Vista adults received six years of public school education. The average monthly income of the population ranges from $60 to $150. Approximately seventy-five percent of the population is subsistence farmers. Twenty-five percent are in local industries such as construction or a local orchid factory. Buena Vista is located a thousand feet above sea level, one mile from the Campana National Park, and an hour and a half from Panama City. | |||||||
